Zappeion Megaron: Zappeion Exhibition & Conference Center

The Zappeion Megaron is a part of national heritage of Greek civilization, designed by T. Hansen (1874-1888). Evangelis Zappas, a Greek patriot and benefactor from North Epirus, envisaged the rebirth of the spirit of ancient Greece and devoted his life to the revival of the Olympic Games and the promotion of the Αrts.

The Zappeion Megaron has been an active part of Greece’s history and that of Hellenism, for the last 130 years. Cultural events of great importance take place within the precinct. The Olympia(d) and Bequests Committee, not only highlights the historical milestones related to the Olympic activities, but also to those related to the cultural identity of Greece in general.

The Committee aspires to fulfil the aims of Zappeion and to be conducive to the industrial, financial and cultural growth of Greece.

We wholeheartedly welcome you to the Zappeion Megaron and we thank you for your visit.

The Zappeion is a large, palatial building next to the National Gardens of Athens in the heart of Athens, Greece. It is generally used for meetings and ceremonies, both official and private and is one of the city’s most renowned modern landmarks.

History:

The Zappeion was used during the 1896 Summer Olympics as the main fencing hall. A decade later, at the 1906 Intercalated Games, it was used as the Olympic Village. It served as the first host for the organizing committee (ATHOC) for the 2004 Games from 1998 to 1999 and served as the press center during the 2004 games. In 1938, the Athens Radio Station, the country’s first national broadcaster, began operating in the premises. The building continued to house the National Radio Foundation until the inauguration of the House of Radio in 1970.

A number of historical events have taken place at the Zappeion, including the signing of the documents formalizing Greece’s accession to the European Community in May, 1979, which took place in the building’s marble-clad, peristyle main atrium.

The head of Evangelos Zappas is ‘buried’ inside a wall in the Zappeion.

Capacity:

The Zappeion Exhibition Hall has 4,546 square meters of space suitable for exhibitions and conferences. A central atrium of 984 square meters that can be used for conferences, concerts, cocktail parties and sit-down dinners.

There are two interior open courtyards of 957 square meters each which are utilized as service areas.
